However, what is common in the work that I have done is the enormous strain it can have on the couple dynamic. People deal with this in different ways and some couples come out the other side as a stronger unit, however for some it can mean the end of a relationship.

Even after treatment has been successful, some couples find that they cannot undo the effects of the diagnosis on their relationship. What triggers a person’s decision to leave a relationship after a cancer diagnosis or during treatment is complex. A study published in the journal Cancer found that married women diagnosed with a serious illness were six times more likely to be divorced or separated than a man with a similar diagnosis. The statistics suggest that men are more likely to leave than women.

This may be the case because there may be a tendency for women to be more accepting of the role of carer than men. However, it is not uncommon for men to feel a sense of powerlessness; unable to fix their partner and make things better and this loss of control may leave them feeling inadequate.
